Charles I (1625-49) Shilling ND (1638-39) AU58 PCGS, S-2859, N-2305. Second bust. mm. anchor. Obv. Bust facing left. Rev. Crossed shield inside beaded circle. A wonderful survivor of this Briot issue, technically among the finest that exist, with lively gold and green toning accents in addition to highpoints and fields that are almost entirely free of handling. The strike, frequently imperfect on this type, shows crisp definition through the centers, with planchet adjustments circling the outer legends. Currently the single finest coin graded by PCGS, with two graded AU58 at NGC and none finer. One of these AU58s, with tone not nearly as charming as the present and an arrangement of striations in the centers, was offered in a June 2013 Goldberg auction, and hammered for $3,000.
Estimate: 2500-3000 USD
