George III gold Proof 1/2 Sovereign 1817 PR61 NGC, Royal mint, KM673, S-3786, WR-204 (R4, 11-20 known). A charming specimen of this proof rarity, set in vibrant orange-gold, and emboldened by definite cameo contrast over the central designs. Tiny "pimples" on George III's portrait, as well as a touch of micro-granularity to the right of the shield on the reverse, are noted upon magnified inspection, and serve to confirm what the eyes already do; this is indeed a Proof and not just a highly prooflike business strike like is sometimes found. Light handling on the King's portrait and surrounding fields, an attribute which is entirely commonplace with proof issues of the epoch, defines the grade, but no singular instance significantly impedes the appearance. All told, a half-sovereign of impressive distinction; fully worthy of the connoisseur's cabinet.
