Victoria Proof Shilling 1840 PR65 PCGS, Royal mint, KM734.1, S-3904. Reeded Edge. An astonishing proof, extremely rare as a date, with deep multicolored tone over both sides that jumps into the viewer's eye when rotated beneath a light. Inspection with a loupe confirms the Gem grade, with no contact marks or handling of any kind being visible. Further study reveals fairly significant die rust (as-made) mixed into Victoria's bust; a sign that the obverse die was likely leftover from the 1839 proof strikings and paired with a new reverse. A perfect coin for the specialist, as our search for a proof of this date yielded no found appearances at auction within the past decade.
