Victoria silver Proof Pattern Shilling ND (ca. 1865) PR65 PCGS, ESC-1398 (R4). Plain edge. C.W (for Charles Wiener) on neck truncation. An amazing pattern, perhaps the most uniquely designed of all Victorian types, with an "intermediate head" portrait of Victoria that shows the queen at middle-age on the obverse; it's the reverse design however that truly electrifies! Struck in exceptional hand-engraved style, a crowned garter circles the shield of arms at center with ribbon below. Elsewhere, flourishes fill out the design, with the groundwork finished of horizontal lines. Altogether, the effect is reminiscent of the style seen on a love token of the period; charming and impassioned. In addition to a design that captivates, this piece's preservation also excels. Obviously cabinet-toned, the surfaces are fully masked is luxurious tone that, on the obverse, consists of swirling blues and purples, only to give way to golden outer legends. Even under magnification, no marks are seen. A great coin - true magnificence realized!
