Victoria gold Proof Sovereign 1839 PR64 Deep Cameo PCGS, Royal mint, KM736.1, S-3852, WR-303, plain edge. Issued for the 1839 proof sets. Though encapsulated before PCGS began keeping a census of their certified world coins, we can see how this coin ranks in comparison to other examples of this variety by studying recent auction records. All of the graded examples that have been auctioned in recent years have been in the 62 to 63 range, suggesting that this piece is a conditional rarity. The last time that a coin graded PR64 was offered on the open market was over a decade ago, in a Goldberg's auction in May, 2003. That coin (PCGS PR64 Deep Cameo) hammered at $8,000. However, as most dealers and collectors are aware, the market for proof Victorian gold coins has shot up dramatically in the interim. As an example, a rather unattractive PCGS PR62 Cameo was sold by St. James Auctions in September, 2014 for a hammer price of 7,800 GBP (nearly $13,000 at the time). The present specimen is far superior to that one, and certainly ranks among the finest known for the type, and so should sell for well beyond that point. Lovely deep yellow color stands in stark contrast to the well-frosted devices.
Estimate: 15000-20000 USD
