Victoria gold Proof Sovereign 1871 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC, Royal mint, KM752, S-3856, WR-319 (R7), plain edge, large BP, medal rotation. Though not as rare as Wilson & Rasmussen's rarity ranking of R7 might suggest, this piece is certainly a conditional rarity. NGC has graded only one proof 1871 sovereign higher than this one, and considering that they do not differentiate between varieties on their census rankings for this date, that piece could very well be a different variety. There have been several graded examples that have sold over the past decade, but none have been graded higher than Proof 64. Therefore, what makes this piece truly exceptional is its condition. For the grade-conscious collector of Victorian coins, this may be a once-in-a-generation opportunity to acquire what is possibly the finest known example of this variety!
