Elizabeth II Pattern 5 Shillings (Crown) 1953 UNC Details (Inscription Removed) NGC, Royal mint, ESC-393P (R7). An extremely rare, perhaps unique, coronation-year pattern that depicts the standard Queen on horse design on the obverse, but places the emblems in significantly larger scale on the reverse. Apparently, this rendering, when shown to Elizabeth was frowned upon, with instruction given to make the design simpler. At that time, or perhaps later, light graffiti was placed into the right obverse field, possibly to mark the rejected design. Since that time, the graffiti has been obscured by tooling to give the fields a more uniform appearance. Otherwise, essentially as-struck. The plate coin for the English Silver Coinage catalog and considering its historical importance as a coronation issue, a pattern that should received extreme attention despite its obvious imperfection.
