Guatemala
Ferdinand VII gold 8 Escudos 1817 NG-M MS63 NGC, Nueva Guatemala mint, KM71, Onza-1209. Choice Mint State with superb original surfaces and nearly full mint luster and very well struck for this often crude issue. Trivial adjustment marks across the bust on the obverse are mentioned for accuracy's sake. The 8 Escudos issued at either of the Guatemala mints (G or NG mintmarks) have always ranked among the most desirable onzas of the Spanish Colonial series. When commenting on the choice example also graded MS63 NGC offered in our 2015 NYINC Signature Sale (Heritage Auctions 1/2015, lot 31190), we wrote: "Choice specimens such as the present coin must be considered extremely rare and as such, this engaging example is bound to attract sustained bidding activity". Obviously, that statement remains entirely true and even more accurately represented by the current coin, which trumps the aforementioned similarly graded example in eye-appeal since the latter presented a flat strike and evident adjustment marks on the shield. As such, the desirability of the present offering is hard to overstate. Likely among the very finest of this type, and currently the finest certified example by NGC, a coin bound to become one of the centerpieces of a fine cabinet including this elusive and iconic series.

Estimate: 30000-35000 USD
