Nueva Vizcaya. War of Independence - Provisional 8 Reales 1811 F15 NGC, Durango mint, KM181. A wholesome specimen of this rare necessity coinage, with even wear and no noticeable flaws. Authorized by Bernardo Bonavia y Zapata and struck only in in 1811 - thus examples where the date is not clearly seen can be safely attributed to that year - the Durango 8 Reales of the Nueva Vizcaya type were obviously made under difficult conditions and struck from defective material. Practically all of them are poorly struck (save for three finely struck "presentation" specimens that survive, any of which could reach close to 6 figures if offered publicly) and many exhibit seriously defective planchets. The present coin is among the finest of the "regular" type encountered by the cataloguer with ca. 70% of the legends struck up, and clearly superior in this aspect to either of the two comparable examples from the Gerber collection – which were also ex-Pradeau so decidedly "special" coins for these two legendary collectors. An attractive and unflawed example of this crude issue, rare in any grade and very desirable in this charming preservation.
