Oaxaca. War of Independence - Royalist 8 Reales 1812 XF45 NGC, Oaxaca provisional mint, KM168. Variety with small lion in the shield on reverse. An unflawed and most attractive example of this cast necessity issue with bold features and free of the defects that frequently plague the few surviving examples - note the examples in the Gerber collection, both plugged (Spink America 6/1996, lots 43, 44). Issued by Royalist General Antonio Gonzalez Saravia in 1812 due to the lack of circulating media. Saravia had been President of the Audiencia de Guatemala between 1801 and March 1811, when he was replaced by Jose de Bustamante y Guerra. Summoned to present himself to Mexico in order to take charge of the military forces of that viceroyalty. Nevertheless, he could not proceed further after reaching the city of Oaxaca due to the insecurity of the roads, many of which were under Insurgent control. On April 1812, Viceroy Venegas put him in command of the military defense of the Oaxacan province. The insurgent forces of Morelos finally took the city on November 25 of 1812, and Saravia was detained a few days and finally shot on December 2 of that year. The rare cast 8 Reales issued under his authority while in command of Oaxaca are among the most iconic issues of the entire War of Independence series and rarely encountered in attractive quality. We thus expect this well preserved example to attract serious collector's interest.

Estimate: 5000-7000 USD
