Republic silver Proof Essai Caballito Peso 1909 PR64 NGC, Paris mint, KM-Pn179. Raised lettered edge variety. The so called Satin Finish in Schein's recent work. Choice Proof with essentially unmarked surfaces and gorgeous golden toning, the slight stacking friction evidence points preventing a Gem designation. A vibrant testimony of Charles Pillet's artistic mastery. While, as noted in our description of the previous lot, Pillet's original design could not materialize intact into regular issue coins, the exquisite engraving on this artistic masterpiece nevertheless represents an outstanding achievement. The setbacks encountered by Pillet during his design of the Caballito series parallel Saint Gaudens' struggle when producing the legendary Ultra High Relief double eagle coins. It is no coincidence that both of these issues by Pillet and Saint Gaudens rank among the most beautifully designed modern coins. A superb example of this iconic rarity, and a perfect match for the previous lot. While comparable in elusiveness between themselves, both the "Satin" and "Brilliant" Proof specimens are noticeably rarer than the ones struck in Matte Proof finish. The only recent sale of either of the former two variants is a comparable example of the Brilliant Proof finish, also dated 1909 and certified as PR63 NGC, which hammered at $30,000 in our 2010 ANA Signature Sale (Heritage Auctions, 8/2010, lot 21600). This choice example of the Satin finish variety should attract similarly strong attention.

Estimate: 20000-25000 USD
