United Amsterdam Company Daalder of 8 Reales 1601 MS63 NGC, Dordrecht mint, Mintmaster Jacob Janszn. de Jonge, Dav-413, Salveson-11, Delm-1206 (R2), Scholten-1 (RR). Of great rarity, this crown represents the earliest trade dollar of the Netherlands in its first decade of overseas expansion into the East Indies, a charming design described literally by the legends: "The Arms of Holland and the City of Amsterdam." Only a year after the production of this type was authorized, the trade companies of Holland and Zeeland were consolidated into the United East India Company. Superbly struck, the devices are set upon fields free of abrasions and bearing only minuscule annealing flaws. An aged cabinet patina blankets surfaces with residual luster, visible as a deep reddish-gold in protected areas amongst the legends.There are woefully few examples of this issue available to private collectors and, based upon auction records, this example is certainly among the finest, if not the finest. This type has appeared at auction six times since the turn of the 21st century with two pieces each appearing twice for a total of only four distinct examples sold. The last appearance of this particular specimen at auction was as a part of the Millennia Collection in May of 2008 where it sold for a hammer price of $26,000.Ex. Millennia Collection; Ex.
