USA Administration Seven-piece Certified Proof Set 1908, KM-PS5 (KM162-164, KM169-172). Mintage of 500 sets. All coins certified by NGC as follows: 1/2 Centavo, PR66 Red; Centavo, PR66 Red; 5 Centavos, PR66; 10 Centavos, PR66; 20 Centavos, PR66; 50 Centavos, PR67; Peso, PR67.An altogether superb set featuring seven remarkable pieces, all of which display wholly original patination and virtually as-struck design elements. While the ½ Centavo and Centavo denominations present spectacular surfaces that are awash in radiant golden-amber luster, the Five Centavos emits fantastic cartwheel luster in champagne iridescence. The remaining four silver denominations are all unique in their own way: The obverse of the 10 Centavos is distinctly dramatic with surfaces coated in a stormy mixture of blues and grays. Completely different, but extremely complimentary, the reverse showcases rich teal and slate tone that brightens as it extends from one side to the other, transitioning first into a magenta glow and finally ending in a brilliant euphony of amber. The 20 Centavos is sublime, with obverse surfaces colored in bold russet and turquoise shades that vary in intensity while the reverse is far calmer with an all-over glaze of honeydew brilliance. The last two denominations are tremendously similar in both appearance and technical quality. Starting with the 50 Centavos, both the obverse and reverse contain virtually every color in the rainbow. Vivid amber and glistening sea-green hues encircle the peripheries, darkening into a swirling pattern of aquamarine and lavender nearing the central devices. The majority of the reverse is composed of a combination of electric and royal blue with a touch of gold dotting the beaded edge. Finally, we've come to the most impressive coin in the set, the Peso. Featuring an enchanting watercolor-effect of tone, and including all of the previous colors we've encountered so far, this beauty comes with one last addition--yellow. A marvelous blend of teal, royal blue, amber, magenta and yellow canvass the surfaces, both front and back, in a delicate but powerful way, highlighting the sharpness of the design elements and providing an incredible amount of depth across the expansive fields. Each of the seven coins presented here are conditional rarities in their own right and have clearly been well-cared for over the last 100 years. In fact, when considering these pieces as a whole, it seems fair to assess this group as unique for the date. Well-deserving of these and many more accolades, this is undoubtedly one of the finest sets we have had the pleasure to offer. From The Virginia Cabinet
