Philip V gold 8 Escudos 1721 S-J MS63 NGC, Seville mint, KM315, Onza-517, Fr-247. Choice Mint State and a charming example of this rarely seen and most impressive issue. A tad softly struck on the obverse – a frequently seen occurrence for these issues struck from coin-rolling mills – yet with substantial subdued mint luster over remarkably clean surfaces and thus a great representative for the type. Currently the finest example certified of the date by NGC, and most desirable in this superb quality. We note a 1729 S-J AU55 NGC example – a date of similar rarity – realizing $10,500 in our January 14-16, 2014 Signature Auction (lot 30253).
Estimate: 15000-20000 USD
