Venezuela
Republic gold 100 Bolivares 1886 MS62 PCGS, Caracas mint, KM-Y34, Fr-2. "86" apart variety in the date. Mint State with the present handling marks well within the confines of the designation while retaining virtually full mint bloom, thus unusually choice for the type. While only scarce in average circulated condition, the 100 Bolivares or Pachano is surprisingly difficult to locate in better preservations. This fact - already noted by F. Sedwick almost 25 years ago (see his "The Gold Coinage of Gran Colombia" (1991) - is even more true today and is confirmed by the average grade of the issue when great collections assembled long ago (when these coins were undoubtedly more easy to locate) are dispersed. A case in point in the legendary Eliasberg group, where the highest certified example was a 1887 coin certified AU58 by NGC. True Mint State examples such as the present one can legitimately be labeled as very rare, period, and are heavily sought after. As such, this clearly superior type coin graced with a fine provenance is bound to attract strong bidding activity. The cataloger notes a similarly graded example realized $17,000 in our 2014 New York Signature Sale (Heritage Auctions 1/2014, lot 25230). Ex. Tomas F. Stohr Collection.
Estimate: 12000-15000 USD
