Faustina Jr., wife of Marcus Aurelius (Augusta, AD 147-175/6). AR denarius (2.94 gm). Rome, AD 161-175. Draped bust of Faustina right, hair in parallel waves / Venus Genetrix standing left, holding small Victory (?) in right hand and resting left hand on shield, emblazoned with figures of the Dioscuri, resting on helmet. RIC (Aurelius) 734. RSC 280. Deeply struck from dies of excellent style and beautifully toned. NGC AU★ 5/5 - 5/5. The figure of Venus Genetrix ("Venus the Universal Mother") on the reverse is highly unusual in that the goddess' attributes are more associated with her military guise, Venus Victrix.
