Decentius Caesar (AD 350-353). Æ 1 or centenionalis (9.47 gm). Trier, AD 352. Bareheaded, draped and cuirassed bust of Decentius right / Large chi-rho (Christogram) between A and ω; in exergue, TRS. RIC 319. Cohen13. Rare! Well struck on a broad flan, with an exceptional portrait for this era. Brown patina, slightly rough. NGC AU 5/5 - 3/5. A rare and impressive piece! The name for this large bronze denomination, introduced by Magnentius and carried forward by Julian II, is not known with any certainly, although contemporary documents mention coins called "centenionalis" and "maiorina." Of particular note is the legend touting Decentius as "strong (or fortunate) Caesar" (FORT CAES).
