INDIA. Indo-Greek or Kushan Empire. Ca. 1st-3rd centuries AD. Carved stone roundel (93mm, 190 gm). This beautifully carved roundel, 3.65" (9.3 cm) in diameter, of gray schist depicts an Indian elephant bearing male and female riders in royal attire (possibly Queen Maya, mother of Buddha, and her husband, King Suddhodhana), with sunflower petals forming the backdrop and linear decoration around the rim. Minor degradation on one face, otherwise intact and unrestored. Ex Heritage 3015 (Long Beach, 7 September 2011), lot 23477.
