Republic Commemorative Medal Pair 1899, Lot of two medals, as follows;- VC-282. Silver, About Uncirculated, cleaned. Struck to commemorate the 1899 visit of Argentinean president General Julio Roca. - VC-282. Copper, Choice Uncirculated. Similar to previous item but struck in copper. A year later, in 1890 the Brazilian president Campos Salles would reciprocate and visit Argentina. An extensive series of medals related to that trip also exist (cf. VC-283-290). A municipality in the state of Rio Grande do Sul was renamed Roca-Salles in honor of the two visits. A most impressive pair of these massive 84.5 mm medals, the silver piece rare, the copper very scarce and beautifully preserved.
