Abbasid, al-Mu'tazz (251-255h), Dirham, Samarqand 253h, citing al-Mu'tazz on obverse and his father al-Mutawakkil on reverse, 2.83g (A 236.1 var.). Very fine and very rare.

This coin is not a mule, as normal dirhams of al-Mu'tazz have the caliph's name on the reverse; the placing of his name on the obverse suggests that it was obviously meant to be paired with a reverse bearing his father's name. See SCC 1307 for a dirham of Dimashq 254h with the same placement of names.
