Australia, Victoria, sovereign, 1856, Sydney mint, young head l., with fillet in hair, rev. AUSTRALIA within wreath, crown above (KM.2; Fr.9; McD.103), uncirculated with light abrasions on each side, the royal portrait evenly impressed, both the crown and wreath on the reverse sharply detailed as well, with pleasing old-gold colour, rare thus

One of the finest known examples of this first type of sovereign struck at Sydney, the second year of issue and the last to show the unadorned Young Head or 'homeland' portrait of Queen Victoria, which quickly gave way to the adorned or 'colonial' portrait, the second type, which is found on the vast majority of this mint's sovereigns.
