George V, sovereign, 1923S, bare head l., rev. St. George and the dragon, S above date (S.4003; M.283; McD.273), some faint old abrasions under lovely colour, uncirculated, very rare
One of the lowest mintages at Sydney occurred in this year, at 416,000 coins, but the reason for its rarity is again explained by Challis, as cited in our description of the 1922S sovereign. Rated R4 by Marsh, estimated at just 15 to 25 known in all. Finer pieces exist but this is still an exceptional coin.
Estimate: £10,000-12,000
