George V, sovereign, 1926S, bare head l., rev. St. George and the dragon, S above date (S.4003; M.286; McD.282), uncirculated, a few light abrasions and a bit of softness in strike within the horseman motif, but the surfaces are fully lustrous and generally choice with handsome old-gold colour, extremely rare
This final issue from the Sydney Mint had a mintage of just over one million pieces but these have almost all disappeared and were probably among the tens of millions of sovereigns melted in payment of war debts. A third of a century ago, Marsh rated this coin R4. Today, it is given one of the highest price estimates among Australian sovereigns in both Spink's Standard Catalogue of British Coins and Renniks Australian Coin and Banknote Values. To say that it is elusive, especially in this glorious state of preservation, is an understatement.

Estimate: £15,000-20,000
