George V, sovereign, 1922M, bare head l., rev. St. George and the dragon, M above date (S.3999; M.240; McD.271), minor abrasions in the soft gold, pleasing colour, uncirculated, very rare
Rated R2 by Marsh, this issue had a relatively low mintage of 608,306 pieces but its rarity today is clearly accounted for by the Royal Mint's melting of sovereigns during the years 1930-31. This is an exceptional example, similar to the Bentley Collection coin (lot 835) except that coin was noted as having a light scratch on the horse. Seldom seen in any condition.
Estimate: £8000-10,000
