ASIA MINOR or CYPRUS, Uncertain. 5th century BC. AR Stater (20mm, 9.32 g, 3h). Winged figure advancing right, holding solar disk / Lion attacking stag(?) left; above, unclear (Aramaic?) legend and bird standing right (or die break?); all within incuse square. Unpublished in the standard references. VF, porous and rough. Extremely rare, possibly unique.
Similar obverse types were used at a variety of cities in southern Asia Minor, from Caria to Cilicia, as well as Cyprus (see Kagan, Archaic, p. 36, 65–6 and Asyut, Addendum C). The reverse type, however, is quite anomalous. If the legend is, in fact, Aramaic, it is most likely that this is an issue from a mint on Cyprus.
