Republic 8 Reales 1835 Ca-AM AU53 PCGS, Chihuahua mint, KM377.2, DP-Ca06. Most attractive for the designation, well detailed with scant high-point wear and vibrant near-full luster. Struck on a reduced size planchet as most are, with the legends partly off as a result. Though this coin obviously exemplifies the Chihuahua mint's technical problems at the time (the reduced-size planchets obviously the result of an effort to alleviate the stress of the mint press, and the dramatic die-break on the eagle side a testimony of the indifferent quality of the dies), it nevertheless remains a quite exceptional example, among the finest seen by the cataloguer and currently the highest certified one: the second finest certified specimen is AU50 NGC. While similarly well-preserved specimens struck on larger flans do exist - such as the DP plate coin and the Ex-Norweb coin (Christie's Dallas 11/1985, lot 285) - the cataloguer is unaware of such coins being offered publicly in the past several years: DP is indeed justified to consider those aforementioned pieces as "exceptional". A rare opportunity to secure an essentially unimprovable example of this date.

Estimate: 600-900 USD
