Mexico
Republic 8 Reales 1848/7 Do-RM AU58 PCGS, Durango mint, KM377.4, DP-Do25. Initials "B" and "G" of the Mint's lessee Bernard Georgy on the rays on the obverse at 11 and 12 o'clock. Essentially Mint State with very faint high-point friction evidence and very lustrous thus most attractive. Georgy's initials were included in the dies in an effort to distinguish them from contemporary counterfeit reportedly struck from original dies of the ones made in Paris, France (see for example Clyde Hubbard's article "Initials on 8 Reales coins of the Durango mint: 1842, 1848, 1849" in Boletin Numismatico Vol. XVI, No. 119, April-June 1983). This was among the reasons invoked by the Mexican Government to revoke his lease in 1849. A well preserved example of this popular and most interesting issue, elusive and most desirable in this engaging quality.

Estimate: 200-250 USD
