English spear-point bowie knife made by John Walters & Co. (1841-62), rare. 440 grams, 14-1/2" long. A handmade bowie knife of a larger size likely made for the American western frontier or battlefields, with great original patina on the blade showing engraving at top "Best Quality / HUNTERS COMPANION" and maker's name and city (Sheffield) on ricasso, with sturdy nickel-silver guard and tight India Stag Handle. Walters supplied frontier outposts from California to Kentucky in the 1850s, in addition to the Confederate Army at the start of the Civil War, a fact that was first revealed when several Walters' bowie knives like this one were found on the wreck of the Modern Greece (a Confederate blockade runner that ran aground off North Carolina in the summer of 1862) in the mid-1900s.

Estimate: $4000 - 6000
