Himera, c. 430-420 BC. Trias (Bronze, 24mm, 9.42g). Facing gorgoneion with open mouth, protruding tongue and prominent teeth. Rev. Four pellets. Calciati 8. SNG ANS -. Very rare. An outstanding example with a fine green patina. Slightly softly struck, otherwise, extremely fine.
From an old European collection.
Triantes (i.e. pieces of 4 unciae) from Himera are surprisingly uncommon, especially when compared to the abundant tetrantes. This is a particularly fine example, beautifully centered and with a wonderful gorgon head.
