SINKIANG: Yakub Beg, 1865-1877, AV tilla (3.54g), Kashgar, AH"12", Cr-37.3, A-O3090, in the name of the Ottoman sultan Abdul Hamid II, known only to Craig/Krause from a drawing, possible trace of having once been placed in jewelry, unlisted by L&M and Wong Yongsheng, possibly unique, EF, RRRR. Muhammad Yakub Beg was a Tajik adventurer who became head of the kingdom of Kashgaria in what is now Chinese Xinjiang (Sinkiang) Province, who ruled at the height of the "Great Game" era when the British, Russian, and Chinese empires were all vying for Central Asia. Kashgaria extended from the capital Kashgar in southwestern Xinjiang to Urumqi, Turpan, and Hami in central and eastern Xinjiang more than a thousand kilometers to the northeast, including a majority of what was known at the time as East Turkestan.
