Anastasius I. 491-518. Æ 2 Nummi (10mm, 0.81 g, 6h). Constantinople mint. Struck circa 512-517. Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Large RL monogram or B within circular border. DOC –; MIB N40; SB –. Fine, green patina. Very rare.

Although the reverse appears to be a monogram combining the letters R and L, nothing matching this description seems to have been used in the later Roman/early Byzantine period. An issue of Anastasius published in MIB (in the BM) is said to have a 'B' on the reverse-signifying the denomination-though the image of that example shows that it could be the RL monogram as with this specimen, given the slightly off-center nature of the latter's strike. In any event, the two examples appear to be related and, as such, are rather rare.
