COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, World Medals, Turkey, Corfu, House of Habsburg, Reichsgraff Marshal Matthias Johann von der Schulenburg, the Siege of Corfu and the erection of his statue, Silver Medal, 1716, by Georg Vestner, the statue on its plinth with the city of Corfu behind, rev legend in oval wreath, 48mm, with contemporary circular suspension loop (Voltolini 1390). Very fine.
Schulenburg served in the Saxon and Venetian armies and distinguished himself at the Battle of Fraustadt. He commanded the "stubborn defense" of the island against the invading Turks for which he was decorated by the Venetians. His statue can still be seen in Corfu and the legend on the plinth, in an oval wreath, is almost word for word, that on the reverse of the medal.
Estimate: £600-800
