Rear-admiral Giovanni Bettolo lead the Italian navy's effort, along with the combined forces of Great Britain, France and Russia, to liberate Crete from the Ottoman Empire. Bettolo was one of four Admirals who governed Crete temporarily until the arrival of Prince George of Greece in 1898 and the foundation of the independent Cretan State.
