Balkans, Wallachia. Vlad II Dracul. 1436-1442, 1443-1447. Æ ban (11.3 mm, 0.48 g, 12 h). Targoviste mint, Struck 1445-1446. Extremely rare. Eagle standing left, head right, with cross set on wing / Dragon advancing left, with wings spread. MBR 253. Fine, typcially crude.

Vlad II Dracul was the father of Vlad III Tepes, aka "Vlad the Impaler", who was the inspiration for Bram Stoker's "Dracula". The existence Vlad Dracul's coinage is known from a commercial charter dated to 1437, in which Vlad granted customs privilege to the merchants of Brasov. The charter mentions that both ducats and bani were struck by him. These coins were first published at the beginning of the 20th century, and the most recent paper dealing with the coinage of Vlad II Dracul recorded only seven specimens of this issue: six in public collections in Romania, and the seventh in the Fitzwilliam Museum. Other than these few in public collections, only a handful have appeared on the market. The coins of Vlad II are the closest numismatic reference to the reign of the famous Vlad III "the Impaler" available to collectors. Typically crude, this example is in excellent condition for the type.
