FRANCE. Louis XVI (1774-1793). Double sol dual brockage (1792 BB). Strasbourg.
Obv: LOUIS XVI ROI DES FRANCAIS / 1792 BB.
Draped bust right.
Rev: LA NATION LA LOI LE ROI / L'AN 4 DE LA LIBERTÉ.
Phrygian cap on fasces; 2 S across field; all within wreath.
Cf. Duplessy 1722.
The features on the obverse and reverse are a complete reversal of what is expected, and the incuse nature of the devices is indicative of a brockage striking. This type of mint error, however, is generally found to be one sounded, unlike this example. The presence of the brockage of both the obverse and the reverse would seem to imply that this was intended and manufactured by someone at the mint, rather than simply occurring this way by accident. Very rare and interesting.
