German States: Fulda. 8 Ducats, 1738. Fr-1057. 27.9 grams. Amandus von Buseck, 1737-1756. Capped, draped bust right. Leg: ANANDVS.D.G.S.R.I.PRINC.ET.ABB.FVLD. Reverse :; Helmeted ornate four fold arms, date below. Leg: VERITATE.ET.IVSTITIA. Only two known examples. Extremely Rare. Lustrous and nearly Mint State with a minute trace of mount removed. The abbey of Fulda was founded in 744 by the Abbot Sturm, a pupil of St. Boniface, and the abbot of Fulda was declared primate of all the abbots in Germany in 968. In 1752, Fulda became bishopric, and therefore the prince-abbots were given the additional title of prince-bishop. Amandus, Frhr. von Buseck (1685-1756) was the ruled Fulda from 1737 to his death, he became the first bishop in 1752. During his reign, the city went through a baroque building campaign.These large format gold pieces were given as favors by the bishop and usually proudly worn in social events by the grantee.
