Great Britain. Copper Pattern Penny or 5 Cents, 1846. P2080. Victoria. Bronzed finish. Obverse, young head portrait of queen after W. Wyon. Reverse, denomination 5 CENTS, with date below. Crisply made with exquisite blue and magenta toning, this is a decimal pattern produced at a time when an overhaul of the currency in Britain was mooted, and the quirky 12 Pence=1 Shilling system was under scrutiny! The dimensions are the same as the current (1846) Penny although this pattern was made on a thicker flan. Usually these large prototypes are scuffed and damaged, but this is one of the finest extant specimens.Graded PF64BN by NGC, and in our opinion conservatively graded. This is one of the rarer original strikings (referenced to by Peck on p.481 of his book) beautifully struck and devoid of the rust spots seen on the restrikes. Extremely Rare.
