Near Extremely Fine; almost completely silvered; some minor stable deposits. Handsome bust on large flan. Aurelian was an exceptionally capable emperor who managed during his brief reign to reunite the empire and close out the devastating crisis of the third century. He was murdered by his officers when a secretary, fearing punishment for a minor transgression, forged a list of officials who Aurelian supposedly had marked for execution, and convinced those on the list to murder the emperor. He was so well liked by his troops that nobody wished to come forward and proclaim themselves his successor, lest they get branded a conspirator. This led to a brief and awkward back and forth with the Senate in Rome as neither party wanted to put forth a candidate and risk reprisals. During this interregnum some records suggest his wife Ulpia Severina ruled the Empire, until the election of his successor Tacitus.
