Vespasian, 69-79. Denarius (Silver, 19mm, 2.84 g 7), uncertain early military issue, Illyricum (?), c. 69-70. IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG Laureate head of Vespasian to righ. Rev. CONSEN[SVS EXERCIT] Two soldiers facing each other and clasping their right hands, each holding an aquila in his left hand. BMC 414. BN -. Cohen 78. RIC 305. RIC² 1351. A very rare and fascinating coin with a dark toning. Slightly off center, otherwise, very fine.
A historically significant coin refering to the unanimity of the Roman armies of Judaea, Syria and Egypt in raising Vespasian to the empire. As many other early types of Vespasian, this has also a Vitellian prototype (CONSENSVS EXERCITVVM).
