From the GH Collection, ex Empire Coins Auction 12, 7 September 1990, 448.

At the age of fourteen, Varius Avitus Bassianus inherited the office of high priest of the sun-god El-Gabal at Emesa in Syria (from which is derived his common name, Elagabalus). The cult image of the sun god was sacred stone and, in 219, when he moved from Emesa to Rome, he took the stone with him; as is commemorated by this coin type.
