Elagabalus, 218-222. Denarius brockage (Silver, 20mm, 3.33 g), Antioch, c. 218-219. ANTONINVS PIVS FEL AVG Laureate and draped bust of Elagabalus to right. Rev. The same type incuse. A nicely preserved brockage. Lightly toned. Very fine.

What is particularly intriguing about brockages is the way the incuse image on the reverse, struck by the adherence of the previously struck coin to the reverse die, is appreciably larger than it would be had it been struck normally. This is apparently caused by the pressures of striking. In general brockages are quite rare since they would have usually been culled out to be restruck by the mint personnel.
