ATTICA OR THE THRACO-MACEDONIAN REGION , Athens (?). Circa 550-520 BC. Hemitetartemorion (Silver, 6mm, 0.12 g). Wheel with four spokes Rev. Small rectangular incuse. Cf. Seltman pl. IV, αα. Apparently very rare. Good very fine.
This is an enigmatic and tiny coin, usually ascribed to Athens but has also been identified as coming from an unidentified mint in the Thraco-Macedonian region. The probability of its Athenian origin is quite high since its types are exactly those used during the so-called 'Wappenmünzen' period in Athens for higher denominations: really small denominations, such as the quarter obols - hemitetartemoria - needed for daily life, are quite rare, but do exist but bear other types.
