KINGS of THRACE, Macedonian. Lysimachos. 305-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (27.5mm, 16.57 g, 11h). Perinthos mint. Struck circa 283/2 BC. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield, spear in background; to inner left, joined foreparts of two horses above HP monogram. Thompson 256 var. (monogram; same obv. die as illustration); Müller 132–3 var. (same); Triton X, lot 123 (same rev. die). VF, lightly toned, rough surfaces. Extremely rare issue from a very rare mint (the Triton X coin is the only one of this variety on CoinArchives, it realized $3250).

During the closing years of his reign, much of Lysimachos' coinage was produced in the Macedonian part of his kingdom. However, the buildup to his eventual confrontation with Seleukos I in 281 BC may have necessitated a revival of output from many mints that had been largely inactive by this time. These events would account for late issues from such mints as Perinthos and Ainos.
