Herod Agrippa I, AE 20 mm. struck year 37-38 C.E. in Caesarea Paneas (GBC 1237) 7.67 g.
Of all the coins struck in Judaea during the Roman period, this is my favourite. Its historical importance is remarkable for three reasons in particular:

1) The coin type is the only one ever struck that depicting TWO kings of Judaea, Agrippa I (ruled 37–44 C.E.) and Agrippa II (ruled 49 C.E.–94 C.E.). On this coin, Agrippa I is on the obverse and his young son Agrippa II rides a horse on the reverse.

2) Both Agrippas ruled over Judaea during an important period of world history. During their reigns, we see the emergence of the first Christian communities (in the 40's C.E.), the travels of Paul (c. 48-62 C.E.), the writing of the New Testament (50's-90's C.E.), the Jewish War against the Romans (66-73 C.E.), the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple (70 C.E.), the end of Temple Judaism and the rise of the Rabbinic Judaism (70's C.E.).

3) This coin type is extremely rare and usually in terrible condition (click here: www.menorahcoinproject.org/ag1-02.htm). The example offered here is definitely one of the 2 finest known and is as beautiful as the one sold 23 years ago by Superior (Bromberg II, Dec 10 1992 &348)
Original deep black patina, typical of the Golan.
Est. $12,000-15,000
