Maximianus. First reign, A.D. 286-305. Æ follis. 9.4 gm. 28 mm. Treveri (Trier) mint, 2nd officina. His laureate head right, H below bust; IMP MAXIMIANVS P F AVG / Genius standing left, modius on head, holding patera and cornucopia; GENIO POPVLI ROMANI around, B-? to either side, TR in exergue. RIC VI 171b. Good Very Fine; attractive glossy brown patina. Maximianus was an accomplished general whose lack of political acumen was more than compensated for by his co-Augustus and superior Diocletian. He reluctantly abdicated at Diocletian's behest in 305, only to declare himself Augustus again the following year to support his son Maxentius's bid for power. After falling out with his son he fled to the court of Constantine (the Great), where a few years later he failed in a plot to usurp Constantine's position, and was ordered to commit suicide.
