Mysia, Kyzikos EL Hekte. Circa 500-450 BC. Winged monster in kneeling-running position left, holding tunny fish by tail / Quadripartite incuse punch. Von Fritze 123; Traité II pl. 175, 38; cf. BMFA 1457 (Stater); SNG France 272. 2.72g, 11mm.
Very Fine. Only two further examples auctioned the last 15 years.
The identity of the Monster on our coins is not certain. In BMFA's note to 1457, the monster is called 'Phobos', the personification of terror, who had a lion's head.
