Lucilla Æ Protocontorniate. Struck under Marcus Aurelius, AD 163-181. [LVCILLA AVG ANTONINI AVG F], Draped bust right / VENVS, Venus seated left, holding Victory and sceptre; S-C in exergue. RIC 1771; C. 82; BMC 1174 Anm.; Szaivert 176(c). 23.89g, 28mm, 1h.

Good Fine. Extremely Rare.

The so-called Protocontorniates were regular coins which where subsequently altered by being hammered around the edge. We can only speculate about the function of Protocontorniates; they may have been used as game pieces or tokens. Cf. P.F. Mittag, Alte Köpfe in neuen Händen. Urheber und Funktion der Kontorniaten (1999) Page 6-25.
