HONORIUS, A.D. 393-423. AV Solidus (4.38 gms), Arles Mint, ca. A.D. 408-411.
RIC-1363; Depeyrot-20/1 (plate coin). UNIQUE. "D N HONORI - VS P F AVG" Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Honorius with slight beard facing right; Reverse: "VICTORI - A AVGGG" Honorius in military attire standing facing right, left hand holding Victory standing on globe, right hand holding a labarum, left foot on bound captive with one leg visible sharply bent at the knee, "KONOB" in exergue. Some scratches or faint marks present, though overall a wholesome piece. It was during the reign of Honorius that Rome was sacked by the Visigoths under Alaric in A.D. 410. Honorius is known to history as indecisive and ineffectual, which led to the loss of control of Rome to a foreign power for the first time in eight centuries. Though relatively mild as far as damage is concerned, the psychological blow to Roman power was substantial. GOOD VERY FINE.
