Fr-41; Gomes-57.05. Struck under Dom Sebastião towards the end of the House of the Avis dynasty, a time of great distress in Portugal. His rule ended with a crushing defeat in the battle of Alcácer-Quibir (1578) during a crusade against Morocco. Sebastião perished in the battle along with most of the Portuguese nobility, and temporarily ended Portuguese independence. The coin itself shows no signs of battle. A real jewel in a splendid state of preservation, with a great strike and flashy luster. NGC AU-55.
