RUSSIA. 2 Kopek, 8981 (1898). Berlin Mint. Nicholas II (1894-1917). NGC MS-61 BN.
Bit-376; KM-Pn156; Brekke-7. RARE. Brown example of this exotic pattern with reverse legends and dated 8981. Seldom offered and quite elusive. Brekke estimated only a few pieces exist in private hands outside of a single example at the Hermitage Museum. Struck as a marketing effort by the Germans to gain a coinage concession from Russia at a time when the St. Petersburg mint could not keep up with demand. In addition to the reverse legends, a German eagle was used in place of the Russian double headed eagle. A companion to the previous lot denominated as 3 Kopek. NGC MS-61 BN.
Estimate: $3500.00- $5000.00
